An Mhaorine Moreath

North and West

Region

The largest region in Caledonia, it is roughly split in two by the Central Highlands. The lands to the north and the west of the central highlands are generally moorland and peat bog, with the lands to the south and the east being heavily cultivated.

Settlements

Balnagowan

The site of Bal;nagowan has had a city on it from early times. The current coastal fort on the cliff tops dates from after the cataclysm, the old city was entirely destroyed by the routing Formorians in 500AF. The cliffs along this section of the coast make landing by boat virtually impossible.

Small City

Lecht

An agricultural town in central Caledonia, acting as a collection and distribution point for the food grown in the area. It is a relatively new town with moderate defences.

Large Town

Torness

Like Balnagowan, this is another fortification on cliff tops overlooking the sea.

The Violet Mage's Tower

A strange tower on the banks of Loch Tay, occupied until his disappearance in 1098 by Joshua McTay, the Violet Mage. Since then it has been occupied by a variety of people, including Shaleph, the Water Mage. During 1099 it was partially destroyed by the explosive departure of a piece of warpstone. For More Comments

The Golden Tower

On the opposite sde of Loch Tay from the Volet mage's tower, another tower, apprarently made of gold, and flickering with heat from the flames that lick it appeared during October 1100. Under the heat haze can barely bve seen the symbol of The One - a group in the Lions.. Ownership of the tower has been claimed by Reaver, of the One, who states it left Avalon and returned to Erdreja.

Blodwyn's Spring

Castle Kilkenny

On the cliff top near Torness sits Castle Kilkenny. An old castle, that had largely fallen into disuse over the years it was partially restored a few years ago, and now serves as a centre for the Knights Chancellory.

Major Structure

Loch Tay and the Loch Tay Monster

"Joshy" – as locals know the Loch Tay monster, is seen occasionally in Loch Tay, and even less frequently in the other lochs. The nature and origin of the beast are unknown, but it is possible that it is of a similar nature to the Kraken, which lives beneath the sea cliffs of Estragales. Although usually peaceful it has been known to eat entire boatloads of people, with the last instance being a few years ago when a group of "monster hunters" mysteriously failed to return. Fishermen however seem to remain safe, although there are occasional reports of nets being fouled by some huge beast.

The occasional sightings of Joshy in other lochs, together with the slight tides seen on the lochs, and the sometimes brackish nature of loch water, heave led to speculation that the lochs and the sea are connected by underground passages – possibly part of the underdark flooded during the cataclysm. All attempts to locate, enter or navigate these passages have, so far, failed.

The Dagda's Teeth

The Dagda's teeth are the eroded remains of a giant causeway between the Caledonian Mainland and Orkneyjar, formed of volcanic basalt. It's exact origins are unknown and surrounded in Myth.

Some say it is natural, some legends tell of it being built by giants to cross the sea, while others speak of it being built by the Formorians as an invasion route.

The causeway cannot be crossed on foot, and makes passage by ship perilous.

Geograpical Feature

Ben Turathan

Situated in the central highlands between Loch Tay, Loch Torridon, and Loch Mree, Ben Turathan is the highest peak in Caledonia. Like much of Caledonia it is rumoured to be riddled with caves and underground vaults.
